Hi everyone! It’s the last day of the longest week of my life, AKA the week after the Klondike Road Relay where I’m still sleep deprived and exhausted a week later. Missed my recap of that insanely difficult and beautiful international road relay from Alaska to the Yukon? Check it out here! Anyways, today is finally Friday and it’s time for the Friday Five Linkup with Courtney, Cynthia, and Mar!
This week’s theme is music, and originally I thought I’d have nothing to say about this because *gasp* I don’t run with music! I love running outside where I can hear nature, and if I run on a treadmill I either watch TV or listen to a podcast. But this is actually perfect timing for this post, because last weekend at the Klondike Road Relay our team had a fanny pack with speakers in it (AKA a Jammy Pack!) and I spent a long time perfecting a running playlist that I thought would pump up me and the runners around me. The Jammy Pack ended up dying and there weren’t any runners around me anyways so it didn’t work out. But if I could have used it, these would have been my top five song choices to play during my run:
1. Turn Down For What by Lil Jon: I literally don’t think you can have a workout mix without this song! No matter what I’m doing, when I hear this song I get really hyped up. I should play this while doing data entry tasks at work 🙂
2. Work B*tch by Britney Spears: This song is pretty stupid (sorry Britney fans!) but it’s got a great beat and is perfect for working out just a little bit harder.
3. Happy by Pharrell: I feel like this needs to strategically play when I’m starting to feel less than happy. Like in mile 8 of every half marathon.
4. Gettin’ Jigggy Wit It by Will Smith: This is my JAM! You might actually catch me rapping this while running 🙂
5. Work it by Missy Elliot: Anything by Missy is perfect for working out.
Honorable Mentions: Bring Em Out by T.I., and anything by Flo Rida
I don’t know if I’ll have an opportunity to run with music again soon, especially since I feel really unsafe running with headphones in Alaska due to our sneaky moose and bears on the running trails. But if I do I’m going to make sure these songs are on my playlist to pump me up until the end!
Do you run with music? What’s your favorite song/artist to run to?

Whenever possible, I run with music. I use one of those Sony MP3 players where everything is contained in the headphones – perfect for running.
My top five running go-to’s are:
Sabotage – The Beastie Boys
One Day Like This – Elbow
A Punch Up At A Wedding – Radiohead
Velociraptor – Kasabian
Around The World – Daft Punk
These songs sound awesome! I might have to steal some of these next time I need some running music.
Radiohead is a great choice. And Daft Punk is also a great band. Great list.
I’ve been getting those recommendations from other people too! I’ll have to add those!
We intro’d our posts in the same way. 🙂
Jammy pack — I love it! Too bad it didn’t work.
Ok, at least I know 3 of your 5 songs. And have heard of Flo Rida, but don’t think I actually know any of his songs.
Haha that’s okay! Some of my songs are pretty old too. Flo Rida is basically in everything so I think you might have heard his songs and not known it!
Oh, I know I’ve heard his songs but I wouldn’t be able to name one or say that’s him. Taylor Swift is a different story. 🙂
great list. i don’t run with music but do other workouts to music and that’s what i based my list on!
I definitely thought of songs I’d like to workout to, and that helped me too. I think I’d run to music if I could play it out loud and not be annoying, but I don’t ever want to rely on it!
Great choices. When we were younger Dad hated us singing getting jiggly w it. He thought it was not very appropriate. Now we just laugh whenever we hear that song.
Haha we must be sisters because my dad said the same thing! I still learned every word and can still remember them even today. You can’t ever go wrong with a Will Smith song!
I’m not a Britney fan either…but I was surprised/embarrassed that I like that song too! Kind of a guilty pleasure!
Yes it is! Ke$ha is my other guilty pleasure. I think sometimes that you can’t actually like any of the songs you workout to. They get ruined by the pain that comes from pushing yourself when you workout to them!
Sneaky moose and bears would definitely keep me from running with headphones too!! What an issue to have on your runs. That may have been my favorite part of this post. 🙂
Haha they are definitely sneaky up here! I’ve come around the corner to find a giant moose in my way more times than I can count. It’s not a fun surprise!
I am learning to run without music because of my Saturday morning running group. I leave the earphones at home so we can chat, and it’s rather nice! Great list, though.:)
That’s awesome! I really love running with people (although I used to be a diehard solo runner) and it’s definitely a nice way to pass the time on long runs.
I had Pharrell’s Happy in heavy rotation last year for marathon training! But it was so overplayed, I finally took it off…
Oh that’s a good point! I feel like I stopped playing it long enough that I don’t mind it much anymore, but I can definitely see that!
